Welcome to the Lansing Fire Department

Thank you for your interest in volunteering.  We are proud to offer you the opportunity to serve your community.  Please read through this packet, and, if you feel that you are ready to make a commitment, fill out the enclosed application.  Then, return it to the Fire Chief's Office at the Lansing Central Fire Station on 80 Ridge Road in the town of Lansing.

About the Department

Founded in 1916, the Lansing Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the town and village of Lansing.  Operating from four stations, the Department covers an area of nearly seventy square miles and responds to over 700 alarms each year.  The Department also serves the community in other ways, annually hosting a carnival, an open house, and an Easter egg hunt, just to name a few activities.

About Making a Commitment

Becoming a part of an active and progressive Fire Department requires a significant time commitment.  In order to excel in our field, we require our members to strive to be the best that they can be.  Constant training helps us to meet this goal; as a new member, this is especially critical.  During a firefighter's first year in the Lansing Fire Department, they are required to make over 70 hours during their first year.  Medical responders are required to make a minimum of 36 hours.  If you decide that the training requirements are too strict, we still need active staff members to help us at community functions.

About the Packet

If joining a busy and community-minded fire department sounds appealing, then this packet can begin your initiation into the Lansing Fire Department.  Enclosed, you will find an application, which should be completed and returned to the Fire Department.  Also, you will find a copy of the Lansing Fire Department Constitution and Bylaws.  You should read this carefully before being accepted into the Department; this outlines many of the rules and regulations, as well as the operating structure, of the Department.

About the Application Process

Joining the Lansing Fire Department requires a four step process before you are accepted.  At times, there may appear to be a delay, but it is essential that all four steps be done properly before joining the Emergency Services.

Step 1 - The Application

The enclosed application must be filled out completely.  Do not leave any questions unanswered, or it may delay your application.  There is one exception to this statement.  On the application, it asks for your "Membership Category."  If you are undecided, you can wait until the interview to answer this question.  After completing the application, return it to the Chief's Office.

Step 2 - The Interview

After we receive your application, we will contact you to schedule an interview with some of our officers.  This allows us to get to know you and to answer any questions that you may have.  We will also inform you of what to expect as a new member of the Lansing Fire Department, as well as training requirements for emergency responders.  Please bring ten dollars for your application to the interview.  Of this, three dollars is for your first year's dues.

Step 3 - The Department Meeting

The first Thursday of every month, the Fire Department has a department meeting at 7:30 p.m.  After your interview, you will be voted on for membership at the next department meeting.

Step 4 - The Commissioners Meeting

The first Tuesday of every month, the Lansing Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners meets.  About a month after the Department approves you, the Board of Fire Commissioners will review your application.  For insurance reasons, YOU MAY NOT PARTICIPATE UNTIL AFTER THE FIRE COMMISSIONERS APPROVE YOUR APPLICATION.  If the commissioners approve your application, you will officially be a member of the Lansing Fire Department.  You will then be scheduled for your initial membership training, after which you will be issued gear and equipment.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the officers of the Lansing Fire Department at (607) 533-4203, or leave a message at (607) 533-7733.  Thank you again for your interest in joining the Lansing Fire Department.  We hope to hear from you soon.
